What You Need to Start Making DTF Transfers
Essential Equipment and Supplies
Creating high-quality DTF (Direct to Film) transfers involves a specific process and reliable tools. At Violet DTF, we supply everything you need to make vibrant, stretchable, and long-lasting transfers from start to finish.
Here’s what you need to get started:
- DTF-compatible printer (such as a modified Epson model)
- PET film sheets or rolls
- DTF inks (including white ink)
- Hot melt adhesive powder
- Heat press or curing oven
- RIP software for image layout and white ink control
Recommended Add-Ons
- Gang Sheet Builder for maximizing print efficiency
- Parchment paper or Teflon sheets for pressing
- Lint roller to prep garments before transfer
Step-by-Step Guide to Making DTF Transfers
1. Prepare and Print Your Design
Use your RIP software to mirror the image, add a white underbase, and print onto PET film using DTF ink. Print color layer first, followed by the white layer.
2. Apply Hot Melt Powder
While the ink is still wet, evenly apply DTF hot melt powder. Shake off excess and make sure the design is fully coated.
3. Cure the Film
Cure the powdered film in a heat press (hover mode) or oven at 300–320°F (150–160°C) for 2–3 minutes until powder melts and becomes matte.
4. Apply to Garment
Place cured film onto the fabric and heat press at 300–320°F for 10–15 seconds. Let cool, then peel cold. Repress for 5 seconds to improve durability.
5. Optional: Explore UV DTF 3D Stickers
For hard surfaces, no heat press is required. Just peel, apply, and press with your fingers—ideal for tumblers, packaging, and labels.
